Website development for Megara: from a broken WordPress theme to a CMS that behaves

Colourful polypropylene sculpture from a Megara packaging project

Megara makes environmentally friendly packaging: polypropylene sheet, retail displays, promotional pieces, the lot. Online, they looked a great deal smaller than they are.

Background

Megara already had a WordPress site, and it was letting them down. Elements were broken in the back end, front-end pieces had been placed without much love, and the whole thing simply did not do the company justice. Visitors found it hard to use. The team found it harder to update.

The brief

Keep what worked in the existing design. Rebuild everything underneath it so the site is easy to use for a visitor and easy to manage for the people at Megara.

What I did

I used the existing design as the template and rebuilt the site on a far more capable WordPress theme, so day-to-day changes no longer need a developer. Then I added what had been missing: a fully responsive layout, a filterable portfolio, video, an automated newsletter sign-up and a long list of small fixes.

Along the way I set the SEO foundations. Clean structure, proper headings, and page titles and descriptions that say what each page is actually for.

Outcome

A site that shows off Megara’s work the way it deserves, that the team updates themselves, and that no longer needs a developer on call for a typo.
